Dr. Pedro Pinto da Silva – Artist Statement

AIM OF MY DRAWINGS:

To re-examine art as an interactive form of interpretation for cycles of reception/perception by the observer. This is the viewer’s task, as well as the producer’. These cycles of interaction will be akin to a session with the Rorschach’s Test.

The producer is to execute through his rational brain after he has mastered execution and this mastery has been automated, i.e., integrated. He will perform without rational forethought.  The work itself is intuitively ordered by his intuitive brain. To preserve authenticity, the instrument of execution as well as the substrate being used (e.g.paper, canvas)  must, at each moment, challenge both sides of the brain. These will have to instantly respond, to create new challenges. At complete execution, each spot in the final work will represent a moment in the executers mind.  Therefore, the final work represents a true interval in the maker’s life. This is why the original can be precious: it does represent a segment of life of the executer.

The work of art must represent the study and unique representation of what cannot be approached by any other means; otherwise, it is only repetitive, therefore useless.  Evolution (even revolution) of interpretation is time continuous (e.g. from Cezanne to Braque-Picasso):  not only a person’s interpretation mode evolves, but new factors of interpretation also continuously appear, as civilization itself advances.

WHAT IS MY FIELD OF ACTION?

To reexamine, and to re-see.  And, with this, to anticipate. This is already done in poetry as well as in mathematics, physics, and biology. Anticipation is not science fiction, but it is impregnated into total visual account embedded in the work. It is an induction, rather than an explicit account.

Drawing is the earliest expression of language. Cave drawings are the first visually expressed proto-language. It is possible that visual interaction with these influenced the very sound of the spoken language. This would mean that verbal and written language co-evolved.

Some of my drawings about language (read from right to left) are akin to a notation; in fact, all written languages of today are musical notations to be read or heard like them.

The anatomy of our phonal system is such that only one line of sound (chord) can be expressed in any moment.  The musical notation through its two clefs allows two.   But our brain can simultaneously process two or more. What would we be, how would we express if we had more than one vocal apparatus?  In a duo, or in chamber or orchestral music the parts created harmony first, to lead in late XIX century to the expression of complex arguments and dissonances, these being closer to societal life itself.

Another mode of language expression are comic books where image and legends (fummetti) co-exit to express account.

ART IS COMPRISED IN THE DOMAIN OF PHILOSOPHY.

(All) Art can be (should be?, is ?) experimental.  As I mentioned if it is not original, it is not art. All original art is experimental: in thought and in execution.  Today there is art that clearly is part of perceptual science.
